Girls' Generation소녀시대
Girls' Generation (소녀시대, Sonyeo Sidae; also known as SNSD) is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. It has eight members: Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun.1 The group made its debut on SBS's Inkigayo on August 5, 2007, with "Into the New World" (다시 만난 세계). Its breakthrough came in January 2009 with "Gee", which was No. 1 on KBS's Music Bank for nine weeks in a row, the show's longest run until PSY's "Gangnam Style" held the top spot for ten in 2012. "Gee" was also South Korea's best-selling single of 2009.1
Their second Korean studio album, Oh! (2010), won the Album of the Year daesang (grand prize) at the Golden Disc Awards, and Girls' Generation are the only female act to have won it. Their third, The Boys, was South Korea's best-selling album of 2011. In Japan, their 2011 self-titled album was the first by a non-Japanese girl group to be certified Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.1 Their 2014 EP Mr. Mr. reached No. 110 on the US Billboard 200, their only entry on that chart.4 The title track of their 2013 album I Got a Boy won Video of the Year at the first YouTube Music Awards. After a five-year break in group releases, they marked their 15th anniversary with the album Forever 1 in August 2022.1
At the first live Melon Music Awards ceremony, on December 16, 2009, Girls' Generation won two of the three daesang: Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for "Gee". They won Artist of the Year again in 2010, the first back-to-back win in that category, for three Melon daesang in all.2 At the MAMA Awards they won Artist of the Year in 2011, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.3 Member Yoona (윤아) became Miu Miu's first global ambassador in October 2021.5
