Parasite기생충

Parasite (기생충) is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller directed by Bong Joon Ho (봉준호), who wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won (한진원). Song Kang-ho (송강호) heads its ensemble cast, and the story follows a poor family who work their way into the home and life of a wealthy one. Barunson E&A produced it and CJ Entertainment distributed it in South Korea.1 It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2019, and opened in South Korean cinemas on May 30. Neon, which had bought the US and Canadian rights, released it in the US on October 11, 2019.12

At Cannes it won the Palme d'Or, the festival's top prize. It was the first Korean film to do so, and the first winner by a unanimous jury vote since 2013.1 At the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, 2020, it won four of its six nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. It was the first South Korean film nominated for an Oscar in any category, the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture, and one of only four films to win both the Palme d'Or and Best Picture. Its five wins at those two events are the most for any title in DabPop's count of Korean wins at Cannes, Venice, Berlin, the Oscars and the Emmys.14 It also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and was the first non-English-language film to win the Screen Actors Guild (now Actor Awards) prize for a film cast.1

At home, it won Best Film at the 40th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2019, where it had the most nominations (11) and the most wins (5).5 It sold 10,316,367 cinema tickets in South Korea, #25 on DabPop's list of the highest-grossing Korean films by admissions.3 Worldwide it grossed $258.1 million, including $71.4 million in South Korea and $53.7 million in the US and Canada.1
